Richtersveld Expedition: Day 1
The Expedition begins at the Augrabie Falls National Park where the afternoon is spent relaxing and listening to the roar of the mighty Augrabie Falls. Here we will spend the evening around a camp fire getting to know one another and enjoy a sumptuous meal, prepared by our bush chef under a starry evening before we drift off for a well deserved rest.
Richtersveld Expedition: Day 2
An early start to the day as we make our way out of Augrabie and back to the N14 and towards Poffadder where we can pick up anything that we may have forgotten, before heading off on the Namaqua 4x4 Eco-Trail. We enjoy the scenery and stop along the way to enjoy all this little piece of paradise has to offer. Our route then takes us down to the Gariep (Orange) River and then back into the mountains. We pass Mt Elsberg and Levailants peak before making our way back to the river and the settlement at Witbank.
We pass the village of Kabis before making our way down to Groot Melkboom and our campsite for the evening. We set up camp on the banks of the Gariep (Orange) River for another day in this desert paradise.
Richtersveld Expedition: Day 3
After another leisurely start to the day the road takes us firstly away from the river and back into the mountains! We take a relaxed drive through some of the most breathtaking scenery South Africa has to offer! We pass Mt Hahn Romanberg and pass Raman’s drift, and then at Goodhouse we join the river once again.
At Henkriesmond we leave the river once again, before entering the Kamchab “river” bed as we make our way back between the peaks down to the Gariep (Orange) River for another evening camping next to South Africa’s largest river.
Richtersveld Expedition: Day 4
Another leisurely start to the day as we continue along the Eco-trail before meeting the N7 and the first tar road we have seen for the last few days.
Our next stop will be at Vioolsdrif where we are able to get a few things before making our way down river to the campsite at Aquacade campsite. Something to look forward to is a cold drink at the pub and a great campsite after a few days of roughing it.
Richtersveld Expedition : Day 5
A relaxing day next to the river, for those who wish or maybe a full days rafting down the river for those with a bit more of an adventurous spirit.
Richtersveld Expedition: Day 6
Nature Reserve, and pass the barren Helskloof before finding the remote villages of Eksteenfontien and Khubus. From Khubus the Ais-Ais Richtersveld Trans Frontier Park awaits, as we make our way to Sendilingsdrift and onto Potjiespram campsite!
The Richtersveld is regarded as one of the world’s richest succulent areas, harbouring 30% of South Africa’s succulent species, including a number of Quiver tree species and the legendary “halfmens”. Although game is not the main attraction of the area, there is species such as the rare Hartman’s Zebra, Klipspringer, Duiker, Leopard, Grey Reebok, Caracal, Black backed jackal, Steenbok, Vervet monkeys and Baboons. The park also has a small population of indigenous people, who live their lives as stock farmers, unchanged from the time when their tough ancestors lived on the land.
Richtersveld Expedition: Day 7
A relaxing day around the camp, enjoying the sights and sounds of this Mountain desert wonderland, or taking a drive and exploring some of the beauty.
Richtersveld Expedition: Day 8
We depart from the this piece of paradise, for the Gariep River Estuary near the town of Alexander Bay, the estuary and adjoining wetland is declared a RAMSAR site.
The estuary is well known for its Pelicans and Flamingo’s, as well as numerous other bird species.
We continue along the coastline towards the small harbour town of Port Nollath, where we stop and make a quick stop at the harbour to see the diamond boats, before depart for the main town of Namaqualand, Springbok.
No trip to Namaqualand is complete without a visit to the Springbok Lodge, the history of Springbok and the copper mining industry are displayed on the walls.
We spend a comfortable evening at Springbok Lodge.
Richtersveld Expedition: Day 9
After breakfast we reluctantly say our last good-byes as we make our way back home on our own time
